A group of JCS Year 10 and 11 Science students participated in an on-line session last week called, ‘Pulse at Parkes’ that was hosted by the CSIRO. The opportunity included the students being able to control the Parkes radio telescope remotely from their classroom at JCS.
The group learned about the CSIRO, the electromagnetic spectrum and celestial objects called pulsars, which like neutron stars are formed after a massive star implodes on itself. Students also got a taste of what research work is like and had the chance to ask questions of the team from the CSIRO hosting the session.
They worked with researchers, and the Parkes radio telescope, to take measurements of radio frequency waves emitted by pulsars which will contribute to future research projects.
After the session year 10 student, Emily Becker commented, “I loved the experience, a real eye opener to science”. Camran Stubbs also said ” I would come and do it again it was great”.
