Jindabyne Central School was represented by a talented team of female athletes who competed well at the recent Secondary Regional Athletics Carnival held at the AIS in Canberra on Friday August 2.
The JCS students Georgia Gardiner, Sophie Reid , Zara Gardiner, Tori Flanagan and Lilly Trudgett competed in 15 events between them across the day with all girls finishing in the Top 10 of all events they entered, a fantastic achievement. Jemima Faint and Lilly Wallis were members of the Under 15 year old 4 x 100m relay team that also included Lilly Trudgett and Tori Flanagan who competed and came 4th in their relay event.
The major results include Georgia finishing 1st in Long Jump and 2nd in 200m dash. Georgia also came 3rd in the 100m, 6th in high jump and 4th in Shot Put. Sophie finished 2nd in Discuss Throw and Zara came 2nd in Triple Jump. Zara also came 5th in Long Jump and 8th in Shot Put. These results have earned the three girls a place in the State Athletics Championships to be held in Sydney next month.
Other notable results include the dedicated Tori Flanagan who narrowly missed out on making State coming 3rd in Long Jump and 5th in Triple Jump. Athletes must finish in the top 2 places of their event to progress to State. Lilly Trudgett came 9th in 100m and 9th in Long Jump.
The girls performed well and continue to be great role models for other students at school. All girls have competed successfully at countless athletics events during their time at JCS both at school and outside events. They have also achieved Age Champion status at many school based athletics carnivals over the years. In fact the 15 year old relay team have competed together since primary school!
Unfortunately the JCS Secondary Athletics Carnival was cancelled this year due to weather constraints however students were able to self-nominate to Zone level based on previous times and distances at other external events.
From this process, the girls were then selected to compete at the Zone Carnival in Moruya where they performed well enough in their chosen events to then compete at the recent Regional event in Canberra.
The upcoming State Championships in Sydney will give the girls an opportunity to participate in a competitive sport at the state level and above. The State event attracts over 2200 schools with approximately 1000 competitors over the three days.
JCS principal Felix Bachmann commented “there would not be many smaller high schools who would have 3-4 representatives attending so it’s a fantastic achievement for the three students who have made it and JCS is proud.”
