Year 10 Camp in Canberra

In Week 9 of Term 1, 44 Year 10 students embarked on a Wellbeing and education tour of the national capital. Over the three days, students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy; as well as involving themselves in a range of activities aimed on developing communication and teambuilding skills, stepping (well, more like climbing or abseiling) out of comfort zones, and plain, simple, good old fashion

fun!

Visits to new and old Parliament House allowed students to observe Australian democracy in action. In fact, students even saw Mr. Mike Kelly addressing the House of Representatives. Students enjoyed exploring the variety of displays at the National Museum, and there were many photo opportunities to be had. The War Memorial was powerful and sombre, allowing students to consider the hardships endured by those at war. The CSIRO Discovery Centre gave students an interactive journey through CSIRO and Australian science history. Work experience opportunities on offer at CSIRO gave a lot of students something to think about. The final morning was spent at the National Zoo and Aquarium. It was delightful strolling amongst the animals in glorious Autumn sunshine.

Amongst the learning the Year 10s conquered nerves and challenged themselves at a session at Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing. Watching and listening to the students encourage and praise each other was incredible. An evening of Ten Pin Bowling was loud, silly and fun. Sportsmanship was on display as everyone praised and laughed at all the successes and epic fails! The 3 day camp concluded with games of Laser tag. Strategy and teamwork were the key here… and, of course, some light-hearted competition!

Overall, the camp was a huge success and Mr Rudd Ms Heath were so proud and impressed with the Year 10s. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the 3 days with these kids. Canberra was simply the perfect location for our camp!

As an additional note: The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of this camp the Australian Government is contributing $20 back to each student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program.
