Engaging Students in Conservation: The Koala Smart Project

Koala Project Video

During Term 2, an exciting government-sponsored initiative called the Koala Smart Project captivated the minds of Year 7 and 8 Jindabyne High School students. The project aimed to address the declining koala population in the wild through education and community engagement. Led by National Parks and Wildlife officers from Kosciuszko National Park, this initiative provided students with invaluable opportunities to learn about the threats faced by koalas and actively contribute to their conservation efforts.

The students participated in two incursions and an engaging excursion to a local koala habitat. The excursion, held at Gegedzerick Travelling Stock Reserve on May 10, was organised by the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) in collaboration with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). Here, students delved into the habitat and life cycle of koalas while gaining a firsthand understanding of the challenges these creatures face. The students were involved in tree planting activities to help preserve the koala habitat, recognising the importance of restoring ecosystems for koala survival. Additionally, students had the opportunity to interview experts on koalas, deepening their understanding and appreciation for these marsupials.

Following the excursion, the students completed a Koala Threat Project, where they researched and prepared messages to raise awareness about the threats facing the local koala population. Addressing outcomes within the Year 7 Science and Year 8 Geography curriculums, students used various mediums to create engaging content to reach out to the wider community. Notably, a video created by three Year 7 students was showcased during a high school assembly, capturing the attention of their peers and educators. The video (which can be watched below) effectively communicated the importance of koala conservation and was well-received by the audience.

Congratualtions to all the participating students in the Koala Smart Project. Their enthusiasm and commitment to the cause is commendable. Their completed projects, which may be published on the internet by DPE/NPWS, will undoubtedly contribute to raising awareness among the wider community.
