Students Embrace Career Exploration and Hands-On Learning Through TAFE NSW YES Program

Automotive students

Eight Jindabyne High School students recently had the opportunity to expand their horizons and explore alternative education and training options through the YES Program. Organised by the NSW Institute of TAFE (Cooma Campus), this five-week program (one day a week) aimed to showcase possible employment pathways and provide hands-on activities that promote learning.

The YES Program, which took place every Thursday, offered two course options: "Be a Mechanic" and "Cafe Skills." For the first time, TAFE NSW offered the latter hospitality course to JCS students, providing them with valuable insights into the industry.

"Be a Mechanic" aimed to prepare learners who may be interested in pursuing a career in the automotive industry. The course covered various areas, including heavy vehicle, light vehicle, motorcycle, and agriculture. Students had the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of vehicle systems and even engage in practical tasks.

On the other hand, the "Cafe Skills" course prepared students for the hospitality industry. The curriculum covered essential topics such as hygiene practices, coffee skills (including espresso preparation), crafting non-alcoholic beverages, customer service, and basic food preparation.

The JCS Careers Department collaborated with TAFE NSW to ensure the smooth delivery of the program. They provided transportation for the students each week, highlighting the school's commitment to offering vocational education pathways and encouraging real-world educational experiences.

The YES Program not only allowed the students to explore potential career paths but also emphasised the importance of practical learning and equipped them with essential skills for their future endeavors. Congratulations to our  students that participated in the program, demostrating hardwork and commitment to increasing their future employment opportunities.
