JCS students innovate at Snowy Monaro Students Hackathon

Students speak with ANU academic Dr. Pip Ryan

In Semester One, 7 students from JCS were involved in the Snowy Monaro Students Hackathon (SMaSH); along with students from Bombala High School. Their challenge was to design and develop an web-app to solve an identified problem.

The problem JCS chose was how to begin to raise awareness, and monitor, carbon emissions from cars in our region. Their app included a real time carbon emissions calculator which calculates the carbon emission based on vehicle and travelling conditions.

The students engaged in a variety of workshops, learning and practicing principles and processes, such as questioning users to get feedback on their ideas and plans. The program was facilitated by barrister and ANU academic Dr. Pip Ryan and Dr. Thor Slater of Snowy Mountains Innovation Network. Students were also provided with mentoring from law students at The Australian National University and support from leading innovation and startup practitioners. In Term three, the JCS students will talk to the NRMA about the students’ work and the company’s ambitions for low-carbon transport.

The students - Charlie, Mitch, Asher, Hayden, Nik, Tyler and Freya - are to be commended for their efforts, enthusiasm, communication and learning of new skills to complete this project. Their dedication was amazing as the project included a commitment of many hours after school to complete. Well done Team JCS!
